Animal Behaviour - University of Chester - North West
The study of how and why animals behave as they do is a fascinating subject and in recent years there have been enormous theoretical advances in this field.

There is also the increasing realisation that humans have a special responsibility towards other animals and their welfare. The study of Animal Behaviour is an excellent way of obtaining some general science -based skills as well as a useful preparation for careers involving animals.

This programme, based in the Department of Biological Sciences, offers an ideal opportunity to explore the study of animal behaviour both practically and theoretically. Staff expertise in the department spans several areas of animal behaviour and covers a range of species, including primates, amphibians and horses. The curriculum at Chester is informed by research and offers a challenging yet supportive academic environment at the cutting edge of knowledge.

State of the art laboratory and extensive research facilities support your learning as you develop from introductory knowledge-based modules to advanced critical analysis of current issues in animal behaviour science. Lecturing staff are active in animal behaviour or welfare research, and provide opportunities for students to join ongoing research projects in their final year.

Practical experience is considered to be essential in this discipline and your first year of study you will travel to Reaseheath College in Nantwich for one day a week where your teaching will be based around the very extensive animal care facilities.

As well as learning about the care of domestic species of birds, mammals, reptiles and fish, you'll also have access to an impressive range of exotic species including a colony of meerkats, a troop of ring-tailed lemurs, a herd of assorted large herbivores, and various birds of prey.

Furthermore, Chester Zoo, one of the UK's best zoos in terms of conservation, is located only two miles from the campus and several modules involve zoo visits. The department is also able to fund each student to have a free zoo pass.
