Gender Legislation

The Equal Pay Act 1970

This Act prohibits discrimination in pay and conditions of work between men and women.

The Sex Discrimination Act 1975

This Act protects men and women against discrimination in employment, training, education, provision and sale of goods and housing. In employment and training it is also unlawful to discriminate against someone on the grounds that they are married, or a civil partner, or on the grounds of gender reassignment.

The Equality Act 2006

This Act amends the Sex Discrimination Act 1975 to ensure that all public authorities will have a gender duty to:

  • eliminate unlawful discrimination and
  • promote equality of opportunity between men and women.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission has published a detailed Code of Practice to provide direction and guidance on the gender duty.
